about events
i've always believed i'm meant to do big things. how big? i'm not sure. but that's why i loved organising events in smu despite the countless hours of free manual labour, irresponsible teammates u meet, the lousy office politics u're exposed to and demanding arrogant sponsors u hafta please. events made me grow up, opened up eyes to lots of things nv known to me. it allowed me to meet all kinds of pple, learn to negotiate, to fight for things that i believe in and to sacrifice n give myself to community, pple i dun even know.
i remember that one incident during Open House very clearly, when some ungrateful smu wakeboarders including this model who's in the media now (i shant name names here) confronted n scolded me for being biased against their cca. there was this competition gg on btw ccas n there was a loophole that i didn't think of when planning the event. so these unethical ccas were using that loophole just so their cca will win the prize money when it was clearly against the rules i stated. there was no way of being fair to the rest of the ccas n as an organiser i could only try my best to come down on the cca that was breaking the rules most blatantly. knowing that i was a mere freshie, they were literally shouting into my face. thankfully linda, my chair, came to my rescue, or else i would haf just broken down in front of these evil pple. still, i went into the committee's holding room n cried. i worked my ass off for this event n yet such idiots spoilt it.
looking back, i smile. i'm much stronger now n can definitely deal with such situations better.
besides Open House, i also organised VIVACE twice n SMUve. of all, i feel the most for the first VIVACE since it was the very first one ever held b4 n we were the pioneer committee. not many know this, but i was the one who thought of the event's name. Vivace, it means lively n spirited. n that was wat we envisioned the event to be like. To convince the student office to use the name (since those managers always liked our ideas to be substantiated), our comm collectively came up with the the following, hence the caps to the word vivace.
"The event signifies the freshmen's first step into SMU as Vibrant Individuals. They bring Vitality, and as they embark on an Adventure in SMU, blending their own values with that of SMU's Culture, they go through a journey of Evolution."
haha sounds quite crap to me now. but watever =p
read the wall posts n couldn't help but keep grinning. the story is that this yr's committee decided to change the event's name back to CCA Day, claiming that nobody knows wat VIVACE means. hahaha, like how lame. the point is to make them know! the more pple know wat it is, it measures the success of ur event! i'm just so happy that so many pple actually recognise the significance of VIVACE and how it plays a part in smu's student life n image. i'm so glad i was a huge part of it n sad that its not kept as a smu tradition. but knowing how the school n office works, its pointless to fight for the name to be left as it is. at least pple remembers n identifies with it =) n thats the whole point of events izzant it? to create fond memories.

the original VIVACE committee, 2004
the original VIVACE poster that i so loved. designed by my angel n senior fr HC. n which totally beats the bean-man icon of VIVACE06.
